What Is Learning Experience Design?

Learning experience design (LXD) is  “the process of creating learning experiences that enable the learner to achieve the desired learning outcomes in a human centered and goal oriented way” (LXD.org, 2018). The focus of the LXD role is to consider the needs of the learners in the learning process resulting in an impact on course design. Key words related to LXD are experience, design, learning, human centered, and goal oriented. LXDs consider how individuals learn through immersive experiences. LXDs follow well vetted design processes. They focus on the student at the center of the learning, which influences the course design and teaching. We keep the learning goals of each specific situation at the center of the design process to create a successful learning environment.

When we consider the learner as part of course design and instruction we focus on pedagogy AND andragogy. Our learners come from very diverse backgrounds and we must consider how to meet them where they are and move them forward. We work with students that require both  pedagogical and andragogical support. Pedagogy refers to more dependent learning. The focus is on the instructor presenting the content. Andragogy refers to more independent and taking responsibility for learning. The focus on the learner experiencing the content is evident in the combination of experience and design in learning experience design.
